How to Make a Trash and Recycling Island or Cupboard

When we first moved into our house, we renovated all of the rooms except the kitchen and bathrooms.  This left an old and slightly impractical kitchen for me to use.  Being that I am interested in recycling and composting, I decided that our kitchen needed a trash/recycling/composting island of sorts.  I found a very cool one online, but it was just too expensive, especially since we are eventually re-doing the kitchen.  So, I got creative.

I found this beauty of a cabinet on Craigslist for $15.  Then I retrofitted it with trash pull out drawers, something like this.
Yes, they were quite expensive, but I plan on reusing the units themselves in our cabinets when we re-do the kitchen.  With 4 bins, we have room for trash, bottles, cardboard and plastic/metals.
There is also space in the middle for the trash bags.
The instructions that come with the units is fairly straight forward.  Make sure to measure your cabinet dimensions before purchasing.

The top drawers also provided a great place to store spices, recipes and other miscellaneous kitchen things.

We get so much junk mail that we had to add a bin on the side for paper.  The compost goes in the red coffee container that you saw in the first picture.

Very effective way to create a trash and recycling island or cupboard in your kitchen.  Added plus is extra counter space for your kitchen appliances.
